This is a story of a boy called Denny coming of age against all odds. It’s a story of hope for an unwanted child. And it’s a tale of setbacks, resilience, and how adults can positively influence wayward teens and gently guide them towards a more hopeful future.
Who wouldn’t be surprised to learn their dad had an 89-page FBI file and was a wanted man? Who would believe you when you say your mom has been married over eight times? Come with me on a coming-of age-story of a boy called Denny. At 13-years-old he hitchhiked from Michigan to California where he lived on his own until he joined the Army. This is a story of setbacks, hope and how adults can gently guide a wayward teen to make life changing choices. It is my hope that readers, through this story, understand the impact that adults can have on the lives of children.
My name is Dawn Dickerson and I'm proud to share this fascinating life story of my father. This book is based on my extensive research via newspapers.com, ancestry.com, my grandfather’s FBI file, interviews with family and friends and a series of recorded video interviews with my father that took place over several years. Other research includes information on my grandmother who was married 13 times of which eight husbands have documented so far. In the family collection are old photos with dates documenting his story as well as copies of his school report cards, transcripts, and personal letters from friends and his mother.
One of the unsung stars in my novel is San Bernardino. I love history and I love this town. What a great place to grow up. San Bernardino embraced my dad, and he reciprocated this by building a life there for over 50 years. My hope is she can rise from the ashes of arson fires, some real and some lit by corrupt politicians. Just like the regrowth that comes after a fire, she too can recover. It will take time and care. Growing up in the Inland Empire in the 1970s and 80s was magical. San Bernardino was an All-American City and still has a strong heartbeat with loyal citizens and supporters.
